BETHEL RURAL COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION NEWSLETTER April 2008

The community is deeply saddened by the death of our friend and member, Ted Darrell Inman. He was a staunch supporter of the organization’s causes. His contributions and advice will be missed. A benefit and appreciation day for Ted Darrell is Saturday, May 17th from 11 am to 7 pm at the Lake Logan – Cecil Fire Dept. It will be a fun filled day for young and old. Dinners of BBQ pork or BBQ chicken will be served the entire time. Carryouts will be available – call 648-4406.

Gospel and Bluegrass music will be part of the continuous entertainment along with clogging and two lumberjack demos. Cold Mountain Bluegrass, The Inman Sisters, North Hominy Boys, Michael Whitner with Up the River Boys, and Dixie Darlings clogging team will be the featured entertainment.

Activities for kids will be a fishtank, wagon rides, and facepainting. Adults will enjoy the lumberjack demos, a blacksmith demo handcrafting a knife, drawings for a handmade knife by Daniel Warren, the silent auction items, and the cake sale.

With all this to do, you will not want to miss this opportunity to come to the Lake Logan Fire Dept for lunch or supper, see and hear the entertainment, and show your appreciation for the contributions Ted Darrell Inman made to this county. Volunteers will be needed for setup, serving, cleanup, cake baking, ticket selling, and other helpful tasks. Call the Fire Dept at 648-4406 any Tuesday evening between 6pm and 8pm to offer your help.

The Historic and Heritage Preservation Committee is well along in their project to record and preserve some Bethel History. About one third of the filming has been done. Several historic homes and Francis Mill are yet to be done. The information flowing from the narrators is remarkable. It will be a difficult task to edit it to a more brief version. Malinda Messer and videographer, Doug Chambers, have a challenging job ahead. As they say, “Tears will be shed on the cutting room floor.”

Sponsorship contributions continue to come in. We are grateful to each business and individual that supports the work of BRCO with a financial contribution. All of you know someone you could contact to ask if they would contribute to further the cause of historic preservation, rural preservation, the food distribution, and benevolence. The main effort of our sponsorship drive will end at the end of April so that signs recognizing our sponsors can be prepared for the Cold Mountain Heritage Tour. But, of course, contributions are accepted throughout the year. On our website, WWW.bethelcomm.org, the index, SPONORSHIP, shows the sponsors and the form for becoming a sponsor. Please help someone become a sponsor.

Bring a friend to the membership meeting May 13 at 7 pm at the Bethel Presbyterian Church.
