West Fork Pigeon River Cleanup June 12, 2004

Bethel Rural Organization members hard at work On a nice Saturday with lots going on (big Tenderloin Breakfast at Logan Fire, a book signing at the Bethel Grocery by the "Cold Mountain Hunter" author) some of the Bethel Community Rural Organization members got hot and attacked trash along the banks of the West Fork Pigeon River between 276 and the Chambers Farm Lane Bridge. We picked up gas tanks, metal chairs, ceramic pipes, glass and plastic bottles, amongst all kinds of junk. Fortunately, for us we noticed how little refuse was in the river itself (probably due to floods over the winter). Along with all the trout, medium to fingerling size, the water looked all too inviting, it was crystal clear and pristine - just the way we like it; too bad the river banks were not as clean. All the work started after 9am and finished up a few hours later. Just in time too as the weather seemed to be turning against us.
Hotdog cookout after the workAfter bagging the garbage, we started the easy part, cooking hotdogs and drinking cokes. We set up a little portable grill on the east side of the Bethel Middle School ball field and commenced to hurry up the grill as the clouds were rapidly rolling in. It wasn't a prolonged cookout, but we didn't get soaked either. All in all, we now know how to go 'bout cleaning up one of our most valuable resources, The Pigeon River. Second Saturday in July the whole thing will repeat itself as we're going to do it again. Hopefully, next time we'll have a crowd.
